Processing as abduction+deduction: A sentence processing model

چکیده
Clearly some kind of constrained parsing comes into play in human sentence processing. The exact nature of this parsing mechanism has been hard to pin down, especially when facts about CECs from different languages are taken into consideration. In response to this issue of providing a crosslinguistically robust account of CEC processing, several experimental studies have targetted Dutch, German, Japanese, and Korean (e.g., [BBMW86], [DV97], [Lew98], [BG99], and [Ueh99], [HR97]), and as a result we now have a body of interesting, empirically determined facts about these languages.

Laconic discourses and total eclipses: abduction in DICE
The goal of this chapter is demonstrate one particular use of abduction in the processing of natural language discourse. DICE (Discourse In Commonsense Entailment) can be used to model both interpretation and generation. For interpretation, it uses defeasible deduction to determine the discourse structures and event structures underlying multisentential texts. For generation, it uses abduction ...
متن کاملSentence Processing Among Native vs. Nonnative Speakers: Implications for Critical Period Hypothesis
The present study intended to investigate the processing behavior of 2 groups of L2 learners of English (high and mid in proficiency) and a group of English native speakers on English active and passive reduced relative clauses. Three sets of tasks, an offline task, and 2 online tasks were conducted. Results revealed that the high-proficiency group’s performance was the same as that of the nati...
متن کاملFirst Language Activation during Second Language Lexical Processing in a Sentential Context
Lexicalization-patterns, the way words are mapped onto concepts, differ from one language to another. This study investigated the influence of first language (L1) lexicalization patterns on the processing of second language (L2) words in sentential contexts by both less proficient and more proficient Persian learners of English. The focus was on cases where two different senses of a polys...
متن کاملDo Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?
Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...
متن کاملFormalizing Multimedia Interpretation based on Abduction over Description Logic Aboxes
The paper describes how interpretations of multimedia documents can be formally derived using abduction over domain knowledge represented in an ontology. The approach uses an expressive ontology specification language, namely description logics in combination with logic programming rules, and formalizes the multimedia interpretation process using a combined abduction and deduction operation. We...
